Geothermal Sector Strategic Environment and Social Assessment

TGDC gratefully acknowledges the support received from TANESCO. Timely availability of right amount of funds is critical for project implementation. TGDC has continue pursuing grants/soft loans from development partners such as GRMF, SREP, ICEIDA, AfDB and many more to assist in development of the geothermal energy in the country.

Project Environmental and Social Impact Assessment

Ngozi

The Ngozi Geothermal Exploration Project (the Project) is proposed to be undertaken in Rungwe District and Mbeya Rural District. The Project will involve drilling exploration wells in three locations. The project preparation studies began in 2015. The environmental and social impact assessment completed and an EIA certificate has been issued.

Kiejo-Mbaka

The Kiejo-Mbaka Geothermal Exploration Project (the Project) is proposed to be undertaken in Busokelo District, Mbeya Region. The Project will involve drilling exploration wells in four locations. The environmental and social impact assessment is at the final stage. Site verification with NEMC experts has already been conducted.

Songwe

Songwe Geothermal Exploration Project (the Project) is proposed to be undertaken in Songwe Region. The Project will involve drilling exploration wells and construction of direct uses components. The project preparation studies began in 2018. The environmental and social impact assessment has been initiated. The completion of ESIA will guide NEMC to issue an EIA certificate.

Natron

Natron geothermal project for detailed surface studies is proposed to be undertaken in Longido and Loliondo District Councils, Arusha Region. The detailed preliminary environmental assessment has been conducted for assessing the likely impacts upon project implementations.

Mutagata

Mutagata geothermal project for detailed surface studies is proposed to be undertaken in Kyerwa District Council, Kagera Region. The reconaissence survey in the area for environmental mand social studies has been conducted. The detailed project brief for the surface studies project will be submitted to NEMC for screening purpose.
